Film Discussion: The Lure
Jul 05, 2023 Season 1 Episode 11
Tiffany and Nicole

We discuss the genre-defying Polish film The Lure directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska, based loosely on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale The Little Mermaid. We talk about man-eating sirens, the tension between fame and family, the themes of exploitation and agency, and monstrous sexuality. Also, did we mention this one's a musical?

Content warnings for discussions of sexual exploitation and brief sexual assault, as well as body horror and some gore.

The Lure is available to view on HuluMax and to rent on Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV, and Vudu.

If you want to watch more compelling mermaid content, we recommend the docuseries MerPeople on Netflix.

Also, don't miss out on our Horror in the Margins merch, now available for purchase through our Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/HorrorintheMargins. All proceeds from the sale of HITM merch will go to our charity beneficiary for the quarter - June through August - the National Center for Transgender Equality - https://transequality.org/.
